Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Prepare for horizontal caving activities.

  1. Obtain information on the features, formations and particular hazards for local caves.
  2. Obtain and become familiar with cave maps, as available, and identify features that will assist with navigating the cave.
  3. Plan a route and determine contingency routes and emergency escapes.
  4. Select clothing, footwear and personal protective equipment suitable for caving conditions and activities.
  5. Confirm activity safety and emergency response procedures, and minimal impact caving codes to ensure compliance during activities.
  6. Confirm protocols for communications between party members.
  7. Complete equipment safety checks prior to caving activities.
